Terms of Service
Effective: 25 September 2026
The short version
Be decent to other people. Do not post things you have no right to post. The weights, calories, routes, maps and weather in the app are estimates, not advice, and you are responsible for your own safety outside. We can remove content and accounts that break these rules.
Agreeing to these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and Fisher Bricker (“we”, “us”), who operates Backpack Weight Tracker (“the app”). By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
Who can use the app
You must be 13 or older. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you need a parent or guardian’s permission, and they agree to these terms on your behalf. You need an account. Keep your sign-in details to yourself; what happens under your account is your responsibility.
The beta
Before the app is on the App Store, it is offered as a free beta through Apple’s TestFlight. Beta builds are unfinished. Features may change, break or disappear, and your data may need to be reset between builds, so keep your own record of anything you cannot afford to lose. Your use of TestFlight is also subject to Apple’s TestFlight terms. When the beta ends, a beta build may stop working, and these terms continue to apply to the version on the App Store.
Your licence to use the app
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the app on Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. You may not copy, modify, resell, or reverse engineer it.
Your content
What you post stays yours. By posting it, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy, display and distribute it, only as needed to run the app and show it to the people you chose to show it to. That licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except as described in the Privacy Policy for content under review and comments with replies.
Routes you share. When you share a route on a post, people who can see the post may save a copy of it for their own use in the app, including planning their own trip from it. You give each of them a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to keep and use that copy for that purpose. A saved copy is theirs to keep, even after you delete the post or your account; your name is removed from it when you delete your account.
Sound. You can add a sound to a post only from your own recording, from your own video, or from the bxpk library. Tracks in the bxpk library are licensed for use in posts in the app only; do not copy them out of it. Do not record or post music or other audio you do not have the right to use, including music playing in the background of a recording or video.
You are responsible for having the right to post what you post, and for it not breaking any law or anyone else’s rights.
Feedback
If you send us feedback, ideas or bug reports, through TestFlight or otherwise, we may use them to improve the app without owing you anything for it. You are never obliged to send any.
What is not allowed
- Harassment, threats, hate speech, or targeting a person or group
- Sexual content involving minors, in any form
- Content that is illegal, or that encourages something illegal
- Impersonating someone else
- Spam, scams, or bulk unsolicited promotion
- Music, sound or other material you do not have the right to share
- Posting someone else’s private information
- Scraping, reverse engineering, overloading, or attacking the service
- Creating an account to get around a ban
We remove content that breaks these rules and suspend accounts that do it repeatedly or seriously. Serious cases are removed immediately and permanently.
Reporting and blocking
Every post and comment can be reported. Reporting is not a unilateral delete button: enough reports takes content down from view immediately, but it is then reviewed by a person, usually within 24 hours, and restored if the report turns out to be wrong. See the Privacy Policy for how long removed content is kept.
Other people’s votes matter too. A post with ten or more dislikes than likes leaves feeds and forums but stays on your profile, and a comment like that is folded away behind a tap. That is not a removal and is not reviewed; it changes back if the votes do.
You control the comments on your own posts: you can turn them off and delete any comment on your post. On a forum discussion you can lock replies, but you cannot delete other people’s answers.
You can block anyone: you stop seeing each other’s posts, comments and profiles, any friendship between you ends, and you are removed from each other’s trips.
Estimates are estimates
Nothing in this app is health, medical, navigation or safety advice.
- Calorie, food, water and fuel figures are estimated from your height, weight, a day’s distance and climb, and general assumptions. Real needs vary enormously between people, conditions and stoves.
- Pack weights, resupply plans and day-by-day schedules are only as accurate as what you enter.
- Hiking times are rough estimates from distance and climb, not a prediction of your pace.
- Planned routes follow trail and road data from OpenStreetMap, which is written by volunteers. It can be incomplete or wrong, and it does not know about closures, washouts, snow, fires, permits, private land or whether a path is safe. Where no path can be found, the app draws a straight line, which is not a route anyone can walk.
- Elevation, climb and steepness are measured from public elevation models that are coarse at the scale of a single trail. They can miss cliffs, and steepness shading is not an avalanche or terrain hazard assessment.
- Maps cover only some areas. Outside them the map shows bare ground. An offline map is only as current as the day it was built.
- Gear suggestions are generated automatically, including by AI services, and can be wrong about what an item is, what it weighs, or whether it is safe to leave behind.
- Weather forecasts and alerts come from the US National Weather Service. They can be wrong, out of date, or unavailable, especially in the backcountry.
- Recorded routes and your position on the map depend on your phone’s GPS, which can be inaccurate or lose signal, and a phone’s battery can run out.
Do not rely on the app where being wrong is dangerous, and do not rely on a phone as your only means of navigation. Backcountry travel carries real risk, including serious injury and death. You choose where you go and what you carry, and you accept those risks. Check official sources and current conditions, carry proper navigation and emergency equipment, and plan your food, water and gear yourself.
Other services
The app relies on services we do not control, including Apple, Google Firebase and Google Cloud, Google Gemini, Google AdMob, the US National Weather Service, Apple Maps and Amazon. If you add your own Anthropic or OpenAI API key, requests go directly from your phone to that provider under your account with them: you are responsible for any charges and for following their terms. We are not responsible for services we do not operate, or for products you buy from other sellers.
Map data
Maps and routes in the app are built from data published by others, used under their licences and credited in the app’s map screens: map and trail data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License; elevation from the US Geological Survey 3D Elevation Program and NASA SRTM; land cover from ESA WorldCover, under CC BY 4.0; and Natural Earth. Those licences, not these terms, govern the underlying data.
Ads and links
The app shows ads. See the Privacy Policy for what that means for your data. Some gear links go to Amazon, and we may earn a commission from qualifying purchases made through them. That never changes which gear the app suggests to you.
Copyright complaints
If you believe something in the app infringes your copyright, contact us through the support page with: the work you own, where the content is in the app, your contact details, a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised, and a statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for them. We remove content that infringes and end the accounts of repeat infringers.
Availability
We may change, pause or stop any part of the app. We do not promise it is always available or that your data is never lost. Keep your own record of anything you cannot afford to lose.
Ending things
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. We can suspend or end an account that breaks these terms, puts other people at risk, or where the law requires it. The sections on your content, estimates, disclaimers, liability and disputes continue after an account ends.
Disclaimers
The app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement, to the extent the law allows.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for loss of data, arising from your use of the app. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or US $50. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.
Indemnity
If someone brings a claim against us because of content you posted or your breach of these terms, you agree to cover the reasonable costs of that claim, to the extent the law allows.
Disputes
Contact us first. Most problems can be sorted out informally, and we will try within 30 days. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that is not resolved informally will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Oregon, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it where you live. Nothing here limits consumer rights you cannot waive.
Apple
These terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content, and has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for it. If the app fails to meet any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any; to the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, consumer protection claims, or claims that it infringes someone’s intellectual property; we are. You confirm you are not in a country subject to a US government embargo and are not on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
General
If any part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer these terms; we may, as part of a sale or transfer of the app. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the app.
Changes
If these terms change in a way that matters, the app will ask you to accept the new version before you continue using it.
